Background Verification Policy

It is County of Blair policy that all new hires must have an acceptable background check in order for the contingent employment offer to be finalized. Interns and volunteers may also have basic background information verified as a condition of being on County premises.

Background checks that the Human Resources Department pulls are accessed by only that office to ensure all Fair Credit Reporting Act regulations are followed.

Background checks include the following:

  • County, state, and/or national criminal convictions search
  • Education verification
  • Employment verification
  • Motor vehicle record search
  • Social Security verification

Motor vehicle record checks are conducted for employees who drive County vehicles or who drive on behalf of the County.

County practices that support this policy include the following:

  • Required posters are displayed in areas highly visible to employees.
  • The County forbids retaliation against any individual who files a charge of discrimination, reports harassment, or assists, testifies, or participates in an equal employment proceeding.
  • Employees must report any apparent discrimination or harassment to their immediate supervisor/manager and the Human Resources Department.
  • Violations of this policy, regardless of whether an actual law has been violated, will not be tolerated. The Human Resources Department will promptly and thoroughly investigate every issue that is brought to its attention and will take appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including termination from employment.
